The Harry S. Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a leading institute whose research focuses on conflict resolution in the Middle East. The Swiss Embassy and the French Embassy in Israel welcome the initiative of the Truman Institute, which has just published in French The Atlas of the Jewish-Arab Conflict by Dr. Shaul Arieli. Invited by the French and the Swiss embassies and by the Truman Institute, this eminent expert will present his book on Wednesday, June 30th, at the French Institute in Tel Aviv.
The study of cartography is an amazing way of understanding history, through the borders’ evolution and the impact on the migration of men and women whose lives have been shattered by the conflicts. For the general public, depository of this legacy, the maps are critical to decide today what the future will be like. It is in this framework that Shaul Arieli embarked on his "Atlas of the Israeli-Arab Conflict," edited by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In this book, the author highlights the story beyond the maps and the Altas – and in particular the various factors and actors that influenced the changes in Israel's borders. What shaped the current borders of the State of Israel and what are the possible changes in the future? Shaul Arieli attempts to answer this crucial question – and one on which the whole world is watching – during a discussion at the French Institute of Israel, to mark the launching of the French translation of the Atlas.
Opening words by Eric Danon, Ambassador of France in Israel, and Jean-Daniel Ruch, Ambassador of Switzerland in Israel.
